The Walk maakt maatschoenen van hoge kwalitieit.

There are often questions and opinions as to what “bespoke” means and what the difference is with “made to measure”, “made to order” and “custom”. The same goes for “handmade” and “quality leather”.  A lot of companies use these phrases interchangeably, and you should be very critical when you hear or read them.

Bespoke in the context of shoes means that the shoe is both made on your personal last and in a finishing (meaning model, leather type, color etc.) you want. A bespoke shoe is unique, made to fit you alone. Made to measure or made to order means a shoe that may be in the finishing you request, but in your closest standard shoe size. Custom can mean a wide variety of things like putting your name on a shoe or choosing the color of your laces.

For us, handmade means that your feet are measured by hand, using a measuring tape and listening to what you have to say about your feet (not just standing in a gimmick 3D scanner). Your last is made and adapted to your requirements by a specialist, the upper patterns are clicked and closed individually by an artisan (and not prefab by a laser cutter). The sole is Goodyear welted by hand (not with a welting machine) and the paint on the soles is applied with a brush, by hand. These aspects of craftmanship make your shoe unique.

Leather is a whole other story and the quality of leather is just as important as fit and method of manufacturing when it comes to durability, look and comfort. We personally select our leathers from tanneries and certified wholesalers in the UK and Italy to ensure origin and quality. Please click on the Leathers page to learn more.
